Oh My Goth I Can't Believe It

You don't see that many brown goths. For a brown person to be a goth, we have to "white up", and that takes effort - the kind of effort better expended on making "80085" with calculators or memorising all the words to The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode.

But when I was young, I wanted to be a goth. I wanted to look scary and aloof and cool. I didn't, in other words, want to look like this:

No. That was not my aim. I knew what my aim was, and ten years later I achieved it. So here, for your viewing pleasure, is me as a goth:

Sisters, have mercy.

Fucking hell! (Pardon my monkey -- I thought I was hallucinating when I first saw that)

Oh what a cute child, and somewhat oddly, looks just like my little bundle of joy. And that chin must be a shared trait?

Sisters have mercy indeed. Oh my palpitating heart!

That's not too awful - although, the hat is pretty bad.

I'll be frank, that scared the crap out of me, so in that respect, I'd say mission accomplished. That been said.... cool!

Duohedron: Pardon your monkey, indeed. Though 'monkey' sounds a lot like English. Have you evolved that far?

Muhamad: Aw, thank you. I didn't stay cute for long though! (It's me, not my sister. I don't have a sister.)

Anonymous: Yes it is. I haven't worn a hat like that since. No, I really haven't.

Josh: Cool? You like having the crap scared out of you? Now I know what to do tomorrow night!

I'd have said more fetish than goth but I'm not complaining ;)

The first pic is ridiculously cute. The second one is quite sultry! So all in all, a successful walk down memory lane. My photos are much, much more embarrassing, and will never be published online (if I have anything to do with it).

Am I right in thinking that the second photo was taken in a passport booth? I hope it wasn't for your actual passport.

By the way, I've just claimed your 40,000th visit! Congrats.

John: You mean I wasn't a goth at all? You've destroyed all my dreams!

Hattie: Thanks, but the photo rule is 'take 100 photos, rip up 99'. It's always worked for me...

Graham: Congratulations! You're our 40,000 visitor. You win a signed passport photo (from my actual passport, indeed) of me as a goth. Happy Saturday!

Oops, Ariane, I must have been thinking out loud.

At least you were smiling in the school photo. The only ones I can remember have a painfully startled rabbit look about them. And the goth one? Really? Goth? Looks to me like you were off to a couple of auditions that day. First for the New Avengers and the second for the Village People.

Hey, you look absolutely gorgeous. I'm a brown Goth and pull it off nicely without whiting up. Instead, I simply embrace the aesthetic with a "darker" twist. Even white goths recognize me and say I look really nice, so skin is no problem anymore. Goth is not about paleness. You have exotic, exquissite features (as do I) and it works well with the look, so keep it up dearest.
